Mrs. Jayshree Ramful-Jhowry currently holds the post of Vice- Chairperson.
As well as having worked as a Barrister in a private firm, Mrs Ramful-Jhowry has extensive experience working for State Law Office of Mauritius. During her time there, she worked both under the aegis of the Director of Public Prosecutions as well as the Attorney General. At the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, she advised and prosecuted numerous criminal cases as leading counsel, including high profile cases, before all jurisdictions including jury trials and Assizes trials. She was appointed Senior State Counsel in 2007.
At the Attorney General’s Office, she was legal advisor for the State to several Ministries including the Ministry of Local Government, the Ministry of Tertiary Education, the Prime Minister’s Office, Governmental Bodies and the “Ministere Public” as well as representing the State in litigation before all jurisdictions. She is trained in legislative drafting and was involved in the legislative drafting of a number of pieces of legislation. She was a member of the Child Mentoring Board.
Mrs. Ramful-Jhowry holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Wolverhampton and completed her Bar Vocational Course at the BPP Law School, UK. She was called to the Bar of England and Wales and the Bar of Mauritius. She is a member of the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, UK.
She has also lectured part time on the University of London LLB external programme. As service to the country, she has on a number of occasions, acted as Deputy Returning Officer and Returning Officer during general and by-elections. Mrs. Ramful-Jhowry is a member of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL) as well as a member of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ).
